New York Produce Exchange

The New York Produce Exchange, established in 1861 in Lower Manhattan, was a significant commodities exchange that facilitated trade for produce dealers across the United States. Originally founded as the New York Commercial Association, it became known for its innovative headquarters built between 1881 and 1884, which was the first to combine wrought iron and masonry. The exchange thrived in the late 19th century, boasting the largest membership of any exchange in the U.S. and conducting substantial daily business. However, competition led to its decline, and it eventually sold its building in the 1950s, transitioning to a real estate investment trust by 1973. The site now features a skyscraper, but the legacy of the Produce Exchange remains a notable chapter in New York City's financial history.
