Missouri Lumber and Mining Company

The Missouri Lumber and Mining Company (MLM), established in the 1880s, was a significant timber corporation based in southeast Missouri, primarily in the town of Grandin. Founded by Pennsylvania lumbermen, MLM capitalized on the rich timber resources of the Missouri Ozarks to support the growing demand for lumber during the westward expansion of the United States. At its peak, the Grandin mill became the largest in the country, and the company town of Grandin flourished with a population of 2,500 to 3,000 residents. The company built a complex of mills and kilns, and the town featured essential amenities, including a company store and hospital. However, as timber resources dwindled, MLM abandoned Grandin around 1910, continuing operations elsewhere in Missouri for a decade. Today, many of Grandin's remaining buildings are recognized for their historical significance, having been listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, making it an interesting site for tourists and researchers alike.
