Buried pilings and former shoreline under the central waterfront

Archaeological investigations conducted during the Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement and waterfront redevelopment identified buried 19th-century wooden pilings, filled tidelands, and remnants of early piers beneath Seattle's central waterfront. These buried pilings and filled-shore deposits are physical remnants of the city's 19th- and early-20th-century shoreline and pier construction. Portions of the exposed timbers and associated deposits were documented and studied as part of the project.
