Torrey Pines: home of one of the rarest pines

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve protects the largest mainland stand of the Torrey pine (Pinus torreyana), a tree species native to only two places in the wild: this reserve in San Diego and Santa Rosa Island. The species is federally listed as endangered and the reserve preserves its cliffside habitat and associated coastal sage scrub. Trails and overlooks in the reserve provide the primary public access points to view the trees, which are otherwise limited in distribution.
