General Polyclinic Vienna

The General Polyclinic in Vienna, founded in 1872, was the first of its kind in Europe, offering a comprehensive range of medical services rather than focusing on specialties. It was established by a group of pioneering physicians and aimed to improve healthcare for the poor while facilitating medical education and research. The polyclinic treated thousands of patients annually and introduced significant medical innovations, including the flexible stomach tube for gastroscopy. Over the years, it became a model for clinics across Europe and contributed to the establishment of various medical departments. Despite its closure in 1998, the site has been transformed into the Vienna Competence Center, continuing its legacy in medical research and technology.
