Stewart's Castle

Stewart's Castle, also known as Castle Stewart, was an impressive mansion located in Washington, D.C., completed in 1873. Designed by architect Adolf Cluss, it featured a striking turreted facade and was initially built to enhance the value of the surrounding area, which was then considered undesirable. The mansion hosted lavish social events and became a temporary center of Washington's elite society. However, financial strains led to the Stewarts' departure in 1875, and a devastating fire in 1879 severely damaged the property. After changing hands, the mansion was ultimately demolished in 1901, leaving behind a commercial building on the site. Today, the history of Stewart's Castle reflects the evolution of the Dupont Circle neighborhood and the social dynamics of 19th-century Washington.
