Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary (Alcatraz Island)

Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary operated as a federal maximum-security prison on Alcatraz Island from 1934 until 1963 and housed some of the era's most notorious inmates. The cellhouse and island facilities survive as a National Historic Landmark and are managed by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Alcatraz is now a major historic tourist site with guided tours operated from San Francisco's waterfront.
