Cannons (house)

Cannons was a grand country house in Little Stanmore, Middlesex, built by James Brydges, 1st Duke of Chandos, between 1713 and 1724. Known for its artistic patronage, including the appointment of composer Handel, Cannons became a cultural hub, attracting public visitors and notable figures like Alexander Pope. The estate's name derives from its historical ties to the Augustinian canons of St Bartholomew's Hospital. After the Duke's death in 1744 and subsequent financial troubles, the house was demolished in 1747, leaving behind a ruin. Today, the site is home to North London Collegiate School, with part of the gardens preserved as Canons Park, while the area has evolved into a wealthy suburb, also giving its name to the nearby Canons Park Underground station.
