The New York Earth Room (Walter De Maria)

The New York Earth Room is an interior art installation by Walter De Maria consisting of 280,000 pounds of earth on permanent display. It was first installed in 1977 and has been on continuous public view at the Wooster Street location since 1980, maintained by the Dia Art Foundation. Photographs and video walkthroughs of the dimly lit, soil-filled room are commonly shared on art blogs and social media.
