MGM Grand fire of 1980

On November 21, 1980, a fire at the MGM Grand Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip killed 85 people and injured hundreds, making it one of the deadliest hotel fires in U.S. history. The blaze began in a restaurant on the casino's second floor and spread via smoke and fire through stairways and ventilation, causing most fatalities from smoke inhalation. The disaster prompted revisions to fire safety practices and building codes for hotels and high-rise structures in Nevada and elsewhere. The former MGM Grand site remains a major resort property under the MGM Grand name at the same Strip address.
