Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church - founding site of the AME denomination

Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church was founded by Richard Allen in 1794 and is recognized as the mother church of the African Methodist Episcopal denomination. The site houses a historic church building and a small museum that interprets the congregation’s role in African American religious and civic life. The church continues to hold services and public programs and is a historic landmark in Philadelphia’s Old City/Queen Village area.
