Mrs. William B. Astor House

The Mrs. William B. Astor House was a grand mansion located on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, completed in 1896 and demolished around 1926. Originally built for Caroline Schermerhorn Astor and her son John Jacob Astor IV, it featured stunning early French Renaissance architecture designed by Richard Morris Hunt. The mansion was renowned for its lavish parties, with a ballroom that could accommodate 1,200 guests. Inside, visitors would find a magnificent great hall, opulent drawing and dining rooms adorned with fine art and luxurious furnishings, and a grand staircase. After its demolition, the site became home to the Congregation Emanu-El of New York, making it a point of interest for those exploring the history of New York's Gilded Age.
