Fisk University and the Fisk Jubilee Singers

Fisk University at 1000 17th Ave N is the historically Black university where the Fisk Jubilee Singers formed in 1871 to fundraise for the school by performing African American spirituals. Jubilee Hall, on the university campus, is a National Historic Landmark and one of the earliest academic buildings erected for African Americans after the Civil War. The ensemble's international tours beginning in the 1870s introduced spirituals to global audiences and are a documented part of Fisk's institutional history.
