Bishop's Block

The Bishop's Block, located in Dubuque, Iowa, is a historic building recognized for its architectural significance and rich history. Designed by local architect Franklin D. Hyde in the Romanesque Revival style, it was completed in 1887 and stands five stories tall. Originally commissioned by John Hennessy, the third bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Dubuque, the building has housed various businesses over the years, including a wholesale grocery and the John T. Hancock Company. After being listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994, it was renovated into apartments, making it a unique blend of history and modern living. Visitors can appreciate its historical context and architectural beauty, especially following the restoration efforts after a turret was lost to lightning in 2011.
