Mortuary Chapel, Royal Hospital for Sick Children

The Mortuary Chapel at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh is a remarkable late 19th-century structure designed by architect George Washington Browne, featuring stunning murals by Arts and Crafts artist Phoebe Anna Traquair. Recognized as a 'Category A' listed building, the chapel serves as a poignant space for grieving parents, reflecting themes of motherhood and redemption. Originally commissioned in 1885, the chapel's murals are celebrated for their intricate designs inspired by medieval manuscripts and Eastern Orthodox art. After relocating to a new site in 1891, the chapel was repurposed, and many of the original murals were carefully restored and integrated into the new design.
