Kingsley Plantation – rarely noticed slave-era tabby cabins

Kingsley Plantation on Fort George Island preserves a late-18th/early-19th-century plantation house and a row of tabby slave cabins that are among the best-preserved examples of slave housing in Florida. The plantation’s historic structures were long overlooked within the larger Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve and are accessible only via the preserve’s roads and trails, making them less prominent than more central historic sites in Jacksonville. The site documents the complex history of owner Zephaniah Kingsley and the lives of the enslaved people who lived there.
