Closure and demolition of Joe Louis Arena

Joe Louis Arena served as the home of the NHL's Detroit Red Wings from 1979 until the team moved to Little Caesars Arena for the 2017–18 season, after which Joe Louis Arena closed. Demolition of the arena began in 2019 and removal of the structure was largely completed by 2020, eliminating a prominent downtown sports and events venue. The site has since been included in broader redevelopment planning for the Detroit riverfront area near Campus Martius Park.
