Congress Avenue Bridge bat colony

The Congress Avenue Bridge is home to one of the largest urban colonies of Mexican free-tailed bats, with thousands emerging from beneath the bridge at dusk during the spring through fall migration season. The nightly emergence is a regular natural spectacle promoted by the City of Austin and observed by residents and tourists from the bridge and surrounding parkland. The bat colony has been monitored and studied by local researchers and conservation groups for decades.
