Guardian Building (polychrome Art Deco)

Opened in 1929 and designed by Wirt C. Rowland of Smith, Hinchman & Grylls, the Guardian Building is noted for its bold polychrome tilework, glazed terracotta, and extensive use of Pewabic pottery. The banking lobby displays Mayan Revival and Aztec-inspired motifs and a distinctive colorful façade and interior scheme. Originally called the Union Trust Building, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is recognized as a landmark of Art Deco design in Detroit.
