de Young Museum (Herzog & de Meuron redesign)

The de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park was rebuilt and reopened in 2005 with a design by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, replacing the original 1895 museum building. The new building is notable for its copper-clad exterior intended to weather to a green patina and for the Hamon Tower, which provides elevated views into the park and city. The museum houses the collections of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, including American, African, and Oceanic art.
