Lincoln's Cottage (Soldiers' Home) - presidential retreat

President Abraham Lincoln used the Soldiers' Home, now known as Lincoln's Cottage, as a suburban retreat during his presidency and lived there intermittently between 1862 and 1865. He held meetings and conducted presidential business at the cottage and historians document that he drafted and revised portions of the Emancipation Proclamation while staying there. The site is preserved and interpreted as a place where Lincoln worked away from the White House.
