Arrest of Mumia Abu-Jamal (December 9, 1981)

On December 9, 1981, journalist and activist Mumia Abu-Jamal was shot in the chest and arrested by Philadelphia police after the shooting death of Officer Daniel Faulkner. The shooting occurred near 13th and Locust Streets in Center City and Abu-Jamal was subsequently charged with murder. He was convicted in 1982 and his case has been the subject of multiple appeals and ongoing public debate over the fairness of his trial.
