Laurel Hill Cemetery - Victorian-era funerary landscape

Laurel Hill Cemetery was founded in 1836 and designed by architect John Notman as one of the nation's first rural cemeteries, reflecting Victorian attitudes toward death and memorialization. It was designated a National Historic Landmark for its architecture, landscape design, and collection of funerary art. The cemetery contains the graves of prominent Philadelphians, Civil War officers, and industrialists and offers public tours and seasonal cultural programming.
