Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop

Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop is a historic site located at the intersection of Bourbon and St. Philip Streets in New Orleans' French Quarter. Believed to have been built in the 1770s, it is one of the oldest surviving structures in the city. The site is famously linked to the privateer Jean Lafitte, who allegedly used it for his business dealings in the early 19th century, including rumored illegal activities. The building is also known for its haunted reputation and was once a blacksmith shop, possibly operated by Lafitte's associates. In the mid-1940s, it was transformed into Café Lafitte, a popular nightlife venue that attracted a diverse clientele, including notable figures from the arts. Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1970, Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop showcases unique architectural features and remains a significant cultural landmark in New Orleans.
