Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (Ballard Locks)

The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, commonly called the Ballard Locks, are a US Army Corps of Engineers-operated complex that connects Puget Sound with the Lake Washington Ship Canal and Lake Union. The site includes a salmon ladder that allows migrating fish to bypass the locks and the adjacent Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Garden, which displays horticultural plantings on reclaimed lock property. The locks are both an active marine transportation facility and a public destination for observing vessel transits and seasonal fish runs.
