Pea River Power Company Hydroelectric Facility

The Pea River Power Company Hydroelectric Facility, established in 1911 near Elba, Alabama, is a historic site notable for being one of the first private ventures in the state to harness waterpower for electricity generation. It played a crucial role in electrifying central and south Alabama, transmitting power over 30 miles to Troy and beyond. The facility, along with two others built in 1930, was integral to the operations of the Alabama Electric Cooperative, which significantly contributed to rural electrification efforts.
