Hopestill Bent Tavern

The Hopestill Bent Tavern, located in Wayland, Massachusetts, is a historic First Period tavern dating back to around 1710. Originally built as a two-room structure with a central chimney, it was expanded in the early 1800s with the addition of another First Period building. Notably, some rooms lack fireplaces, and the upper floors showcase reused materials, a rarity for the time. The tavern reflects modest Federal styling from its 1800 renovations. Its first owner, Hopestill Bent, was a soldier in King William's War and an ancestor of notable figures in American history. The tavern was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990, making it a significant site for both tourists and researchers interested in early American architecture and history.
