Legion of Honor (Palace of the Legion of Honor)

The Legion of Honor museum opened in 1924 as a Beaux-Arts building modeled on the French Palais de la Légion d'Honneur and was presented as a memorial to Californians who died in World War I. The museum houses a collection of European art and classical sculpture and is situated on a promontory overlooking the Golden Gate, forming part of early-20th-century civic cultural infrastructure. It remains one of San Francisco’s enduring examples of interwar monumental public architecture.
