Reliant Astrodome housing Hurricane Katrina evacuees

In September 2005 the Reliant Astrodome (commonly called the Astrodome) at 8400 Kirby Drive was used by the City of Houston as a mass shelter for evacuees from Hurricane Katrina, temporarily housing tens of thousands of people transported from New Orleans and other affected areas. The Astrodome’s use attracted national attention and formed part of Houston’s large‑scale evacuation and sheltering response. The operation highlighted logistical and humanitarian challenges associated with sheltering large displaced populations.
