Vautravers Building

The Vautravers Building, located at 947 W Newport in Chicago's Lake View neighborhood, is a historic apartment building constructed in 1894. Notably, it was relocated in 2021 to preserve it during the modernization of the CTA Red Line elevated rail structure. Originally, its owners resisted selling, leading to the railroad tracks being curved around it. As part of the rail improvements, the Vautravers Building was moved approximately 30 feet, making it the only structure preserved by relocation amidst the demolition of fourteen other buildings in the area.
