Worcester Market Building

The Worcester Market Building, located at 627 Main Street in Worcester, Massachusetts, is a historic commercial structure built in 1914, once considered the largest grocery supply building in the United States. Designed by Italian immigrant Oreste Ziroli, the building features a terracotta exterior adorned with agricultural-themed medallions. It was created for Fayette Asyril Amidon, who founded the Worcester Market in 1894. The market was innovative for its time, with a spacious main floor of 25,000 square feet designed to accommodate 4,500 customers, while the basement and second floor served as efficient storage areas connected by elevators. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, making it a notable site for both tourists and researchers interested in architectural history and commercial development.
