Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge: large urban wilderness with river oxbows and fossil exposures

The Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge is a roughly 3,600-acre, city-owned nature preserve on the Trinity River with a mix of prairie, woodland, wetlands, and river oxbow lakes. It contains visible fossil-bearing outcrops that gave the adjacent Fossil Ridge Road its name and provides about 20 miles of trails through notable remnant tallgrass prairie and riparian landforms. The refuge is one of the largest city-owned nature centers in the United States and preserves geomorphologic river features within the Fort Worth city limits.
