Eastern Market (South Hall, 1873)

Eastern Market's South Hall opened in 1873 as a municipal public market serving the Capitol Hill neighborhood and is one of the city's oldest continuously operated market buildings. The market's historic iron-and-brick structure sustained major fire damage from an arson in 2007 and was restored and reopened in 2009 to preserve its historic market function. It remains an active example of 19th-century urban market infrastructure maintained for public use.
