Sigma Sound Studios - Birthplace of the 'Philly Soul' studio sound

Sigma Sound Studios was founded by Joseph Tarsia in 1968 at 212 N 12th Street and became the recording center for Philadelphia International Records and the 'Philly Soul' sound. Artists such as The O'Jays, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, and Teddy Pendergrass recorded many hits there during the 1970s. The studio's session musicians, engineers, and production techniques were instrumental in shaping a distinct Philadelphia pop and soul style that influenced national R&B and soul music.
