Sparta Rock House

The Sparta Rock House State Historic Site, located near Sparta, Tennessee, is a historic stone building dating back to the late 1830s. Once a vital rest stop and tollhouse on the route between Knoxville and Nashville, it provided essential lodging and supplies for travelers crossing the rugged Cumberland Plateau. Notable guests included Presidents Andrew Jackson and James K. Polk. The Rock House has served various purposes over the years, including a school, and was restored in the 1940s thanks to the efforts of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Today, it stands as a testament to early American travel and architecture, featuring original sandstone construction and large fireplaces, making it an intriguing destination for tourists and researchers alike.
