Alcatraz Island federal penitentiary

Alcatraz Island, located in San Francisco Bay, operated as a federal penitentiary from 1934 to 1963 and housed some of the era's most notorious inmates. The island and its prison facilities are now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and are managed by the National Park Service. Alcatraz is preserved as a historic site with ferry access for public tours originating from the city's waterfront.
