Academic Hall

Academic Hall, the original main building of the University of Missouri, was dedicated in 1843 and tragically destroyed by fire in 1892. Known for its six iconic Ionic columns, which now stand as a symbol of the university on Francis Quadrangle, the building played a significant role in the university's early history, including serving as a military barracks during the Civil War. The structure was designed by Stephen Hills and featured a domed central section with wings added later. The fire that consumed Academic Hall was reportedly sparked by the first electric light bulb west of the Mississippi River, leading to a loss of invaluable library collections. Despite initial plans to demolish the Columns after the fire, public outcry preserved them, making them a lasting emblem of the university's heritage.
