Faneuil Hall - 18th-century markethouse gift

Faneuil Hall was built in 1742 after merchant Peter Faneuil offered funds to construct a combined meeting hall and markethouse for Boston; it quickly became the city's principal marketplace for fish, produce, and other foodstuffs. The structure functioned for centuries as both a commercial food market and a civic gathering place, shaping Boston's food retail patterns in the colonial and early American periods. The building and adjacent marketplace remain central to Boston's long food-market history.
