Northwestern Knitting Company Factory building

The Northwestern Knitting Company Factory, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is a historic site that showcases the evolution of the underwear industry. Founded in 1888 by George D. Munsing, the factory became the world's largest manufacturer of underwear, known for its innovative union suits. The complex, built between 1904 and 1915, features five brick and concrete buildings, including the city's first entirely reinforced concrete structure. Notable architectural elements include a unique double helix stairway and cream-colored Chaska Brick. After closing in 1981, the site was transformed into International Market Square, now home to offices, shops, and apartments, exemplifying adaptive reuse. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, making it a significant destination for tourists and researchers interested in industrial history and architecture.
