Fort Independence on Castle Island

Fort Independence is a granite citadel on Castle Island in South Boston that occupies a site used for coastal fortifications since the 17th century; the present structure dates to the 19th century. The fort is owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, is open seasonally for public tours, and is part of a popular recreational area with walking paths and waterfront views. Castle Island and the fort are frequently visited by locals and visitors for history, picnicking, and harbor views.
