The Palace Hotel's original 1875 opening and 1909 rebuild

The Palace Hotel originally opened in 1875 as a luxury downtown hotel and was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire. A replacement Palace Hotel was completed and reopened in 1909 at the same site, retaining the hotel's reputation for grand public spaces such as the Garden Court.
