Homewood Plantation (Natchez, Mississippi)

Homewood Plantation, established in 1855 as a wedding gift for Catherine Hunt and William S. Balfour, is a historic estate located in Natchez, Mississippi. This antebellum mansion, built on a 600-acre estate, remained intact during the Civil War and later gained fame as a filming location for the 1915 classic 'The Birth of a Nation.' The estate reflects the opulence of its owners, who were part of the wealthy planter class, and offers insight into the region's history, including the impact of the Civil War and the transition to sharecropping. Although the mansion was destroyed by fire in 1940, Homewood remains a significant site for understanding the cultural and historical landscape of the American South.
