Nya Smedjegården

Nya Smedjegården, or 'New Blacksmiths' Yard', was a notable prison in Stockholm operational from 1636 to 1896. It was named after an earlier prison in the royal castle Tre Kronor, where inmates worked in a smithy. Located on Drottninggatan, it became infamous as a holding place for death row prisoners from 1664, and also housed a torture chamber and an orphanage. Initially accommodating both male and female prisoners, it transitioned to a women's prison in 1849. The prison was ultimately replaced in the 1890s, and the site is now home to Stockholm's People's House, making it a point of interest for those exploring the city's historical transformation.
