National World War II Memorial - 56 Pillars and Freedom Wall

The National World War II Memorial on the National Mall was dedicated in 2004 to honor Americans who served in the armed forces and as civilians during World War II. Its design features 56 granite pillars representing U.S. states and territories at the time of the war and two triumphal arches marking the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. The memorial also includes the Freedom Wall, which is inlaid with 4,048 gold stars, each representing 100 American military deaths or missing in the war.
