Hiram C. Smith House

The Hiram C. Smith House, located west of Winterset, Iowa, is a historic limestone farmhouse built by one of the area's earliest settlers between 1854 and 1856. This unique 1½-story structure showcases vernacular architecture, constructed from locally quarried rubble stone. Notably, the house reflects the simple craftsmanship of its time, distinct from the work of contemporary stonemasons. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987, alongside a milking shed from the same era, making it a significant site for those interested in Iowa's agricultural history and early settlement.
