Mary E. Cable Building

The Mary E. Cable Building, located at the corner of North Blackford Street and West Michigan Street in Indianapolis, was originally constructed as an elementary school in 1953 and served as a significant educational institution until its demolition in 2006. Named after Mary Ellen Cable, a dedicated educator and civil rights activist, the building played a crucial role in providing education to African American children during segregation. After its acquisition by IUPUI, it housed various academic programs, including a renowned Computer Music Laboratory, which was the largest of its kind in the U.S. at the time. The building also featured a daycare center and was home to the University Theatre, which gained recognition for its children's programs. Despite its eventual closure due to asbestos contamination, the legacy of the Mary E. Cable Building remains a testament to its historical and educational significance in the community.
