Seattle Gas Light Coal-Gasification Plant (site of Gas Works Park)

From 1906 until the mid-20th century the northeast shore of Lake Union hosted a coal-gasification plant operated by Seattle Gas Light and later Seattle Lighting Co. The industrial plant ceased gas production in the 1950s and much of the facility was later demolished; the City of Seattle converted the site into Gas Works Park, which opened in 1975. Several pieces of industrial equipment were preserved as landscape features, but the original functioning gas plant no longer exists. The park occupies the former plant site along Northlake and is interpreted as a repurposed industrial landscape.
