Franklin School (now Planet Word)

The Franklin School opened in 1869 as a public school building designed by architect Adolf Cluss and served Washington's expanding public education system. It is a notable example of 19th-century fireproof masonry school architecture and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The historic building was adaptively reused and reopened as the Planet Word museum in 2020, retaining significant exterior and interior features. The structure is a surviving example of 19th-century educational infrastructure in downtown Washington.
