Original 'Mile Square' plat of downtown

Indianapolis was platted in 1821 as a one-mile square with Monument Circle placed at its center as part of Alexander Ralston's plan. The original one-mile-square layout established the downtown orthogonal street grid and is the origin of the city's historic "Mile Square" nickname. The boundaries and block numbering of present-day downtown still reflect that original mile-square design.
