Kapuāiwa Building

The Kapuāiwa Building, located at 426 Queen Street in Honolulu, Hawaii, is a historic structure built in 1884 during the reign of King Kalākaua. Originally designed to securely store government documents, it features Italianate Renaissance revival architecture by George Lucas, reflecting the style of other Hawaiian Monarchy buildings. Named after Lot Kapuāiwa, Kamehameha V, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Its distinctive design includes rusticated concrete blocks, arched windows with decorative elements, and a flat roof adorned with a cornice and balustrade. A new wing was added in 1930, enhancing its historical significance.
